It’s Not Every Day

It’s not every day that you marry your best friend. Some days you may wish that you hadn’t.

It’s not every day that you give birth to a son or a daughter… but congrats to a dear friend, Michelle, who today gave birth to both a son and a daughter.

It’s not every day that someone recognizes you for the amazing work you do. There may be many more days when criticism seems to be the focus of attention placed upon you.

It’s not every day that you get an unexpected check in the mail. There may be bills piled on your desktop.

It’s not every day that you are productive and fulfilled. These are the days that a long nap may be necessary.

It’s not every day that you fit into your favorite pair of jeans. God knows, there are plenty of those neatly folded in my drawer.

It’s not every day that the rain falls, washing away the sadness and pain, or quenching the thirst that lies beneath the surface of existence. The rain is a blessing, but noone can force it to come.

It’s not the high points, but the moments in between that make up our lives. These moments in between point the way to peace.

A passage from The I Ching that I read this evening reminds me to that it’s not every day…  All beings have need of nourishment from above. But the gift of food comes in its own time, and for this one must wait. When the clouds rise in the sky, it is a sign that it will rain. There is nothing to do but to wait until the rain falls. It is the same in life when destiny is at work.

So here’s to the moments in between. The ones that often pass us by. May we wait patiently for the rain. Or the next great thing that may come our way. May we enjoy the high points fully, but more importantly may we enjoy the simpler moments that make up the journey.
